Albany, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing), took the oath of office to begin her eleventh term in the New York State Senate. Senator Stavisky, the first woman from Queens elected to the NYS Senate, was sworn-in with nineteen other women.
“The State Senate now has a record number of women serving, and has its first woman leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins in the Senate’s 241 year history,” Senator Toby Ann Stavisky said. “With this seismic change I believe we will pass new legislation that will provide election reform, protect womens’ health and victims of child abuse, ensure education equity and fairness and a host of important measures”.
This year Senator Stavisky will also chair the Senate’s Higher Education Committee. In 2008 she was the first woman to chair the committee and is still the only woman selected for this position.
