Two Boston police officers are showing that America is the land that they love with their Fourth of July version of ‘Carpool Karaoke.’
In what they’re calling ‘Cop Pool Karaoke,’ Officers Stephen McNulty and Kim Tavares discuss the upcoming Fourth of July holiday in the video before belting out a stirring rendition of God Bless America.
McNulty, a third generation officer who joined the police force in 2006, used to be a professional singer for the Boston-based a capella group Ball In The House from 1996 to 2004. Tavares, a 17-year veteran of the force, writes her own songs and has been singing for as long as she can remember.
The video is a spoof of “Carpool Karaoke,” a segment on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” where musical guests join the host for a joyride as they sing along to their own music.
McNulty and Tavares are gaining attention online for their elegant and powerful voices but said it’s therapeutic for them to sing while on the job.
“With the stress we have to go through on a day to day basis, you need something that levels that stress out, and music makes you happy,” Tavares said.
Even more than that, they said the video is a chance for them to make someone’s day.
“Someone once said a good song can make you remember everything or forget everything,” McNulty said.
However, the two officers have excited those watching their rendition and received praise on social media.
